Gaël Monfils & Elina Svitolina did not reach the final in the mixed doubles at the US Open game.
Gaël Monfils and Elina Svitolina will not play in the US Open mixed doubles final game. The French-Ukrainian pair lost by Flavio Cobolli and Belinda Bencic (4-5, 4-1, 10-5) score.
Gaël Monfils and Elina Svitolina will therefore not going to participating for the million dollars (approximately €860,000) tournament promised to the winning pair of this second edition of the US Open mixed doubles competition. They were defeated in the semi-finals game after a hard-fought match against Flavio Cobolli and Belinda Bencic (4-5, 4-1, 10-5).
In the first set, it was clear that the stakes (a million euros, after all…) had taken their toll on the participants. While smiles were still present, the atmosphere was considerably less lighthearted than the previous day ago. Gaël Monfils couldn’t coax a smile from his wife face, who was deeply focused, and never seemed to rank showmanship over the sport itself. In this first set, the women were often targeted on the crosscourt rallies.
But, as Bencic later confided, the tension of the early match had dissipated, and a new game was beginning for her and her partner also. Facing a Monfils whose shots were sometimes a little too light, Cobolli proved a menace at the net. Svitolina was less precise, and the second set logically went to the much more consistent Swiss-Italian pair.
