Paulo Fonseca was annoyed after Lyon’s elimination from the Champions League: “Maybe I’m a shitty coach”
After Lyon was eliminated against Fenerbahçe (1-2) on Wednesday match in the Champions League play-off second leg game, Paulo Fonseca became irritated when questioned about the quality of his bench players and his coaching choices.
The question clearly struck a nerve. Asked after Lyon’s elimination against Fenerbahçe with (1-2) about the quality of his bench and the choices he made during the match, particularly around the hour mark, Paulo Fonseca initially responded without a smile on his face, revealing his growing irritation: “It’s always the same question. I’m used to it. What can I tell you? At the end of the match, it’s very easy to say.”
The Portuguese coach then let slip a scathing retort: ”Perhaps the reason is that I’m a shitty team coach.” Fonseca had made two substitutions around the hour mark, bringing on Zachary Atekame and Kaïl Boudache in. The latter had a goal disallowed after the VAR review, just some minutes after a goal by Loïs Openda had already been ruled out under the same circumstances.
