Will South Korea have to revise its schedule because of the heat condition?

The South Korean Championship league, which until now has been played over a calendar year, could adopt the European format with a break in the summer, due to the high temperatures condition.

Like the J-League (Japan’s first division competition), which has already decided to align its calendar with the European format time, other Asian countries are also beginning to consider the question. South Korea is a prime example. According to a survey conducted last week and revealed Monday by The Guardian , 70% of the 29 K-League (South Korea’s first division competition) coaches favor a return to the traditional league calendar, with the season starting after the summer and finishing in the spring time. This would allow the clubs to have a summer break.

We must make the transition (…) to protect every players from the worsening climate crisis and avoid extreme heat,” called the South Korean professional players’ association, also aiming to “maintain the League’s leadership in the Asia and its global competitiveness.”

After 29 matchdays of a season that began in the late February and will end in this October, FC Seoul currently leads the local league. Should South Korea implement this change, China could follow suit. Asia is not the only continent considering this reform, as MLS also hopes to make the switch starting with  2027-2028 season competitions.
