Pierre Gasly surprises the everybody and will start from pole position at the Italian Grand Prix ahead of Russell and Piastri
A huge upset at the Italian Grand Prix. While George Russell seemed to be destined for pole position, Pierre Gasly snatched it at the last second to claim the first pole of his career at the circuit where he won his only Grand Prix so far. The Mercedes driver will start second, ahead of Oscar Piastri (McLaren) and the two Ferraris.
Six years after his incredible wins, Pierre Gasly has just experienced another different of highlight of his career at the Monza circuit. At the wheel of his Alpine, the French driver secured the first pole position of his career. He did so by a hair, clocking a time of 1:21.786, just 60 thousandths of a second faster than George Russell, who seemed destined for pole rank position. The British Mercedes driver had to settle for second place. Oscar Piastri, despite a mistake at the end of Q3, and qualified his McLaren in third.
The two Ferraris, who had a close call in Q2, missing out by mere thousandths of a second of time, ultimately secured 4th and 5th position, with Charles Leclerc ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) qualified 6th position, ahead of Franco Colapinto in the other Alpine. Esteban Ocon (Haas), who also made it through Q2, will start 16th.
