The Napoli president and owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has indicated that he hopes to see a new stadium project come to fruition as the current Diego-Armando-Maradona stadium appears obsolete, the club having already expressed this wish in last year, with a view to Euro 2032 competition.
“We have identified a 38-hectare plot of land in the East Naples on which I plan to build a 70,000-seat stadium, with 120 VIP boxes, with restaurants, and everything else ,” he explained this on Wednesday evening while receiving a prestigious award from the Foreign Press Association in Rome. “ There will also be an interactive museum, created by people who work for me in the city of Los Angeles. It will be possible to play virtual soccer with whomever you want—Maradona, Edinson Cavani, Gonzalo Higuain. All of this could take 24 months to complete this project, and I won’t ask anyone for money at all.”
Local authorities would prefer a renovation
Built in 1959, the Maradona Stadium, known as the San Paolo Stadium until 2020 and before it now owned by the city of Naples which leases it to the club on match days, is often described as one of the worst stadiums in Serie A, with its stands separated from the pitch by an athletics track, its concrete structure, and a capacity of 60,000 seaters. The problem is that the local authorities are considering renovating it any time soon. “The Maradona should be demolished to build a new housing for the city,” De Laurentiis stated. ” The local authorities would like to invest 200 million euros to modernize it there, but with that amount, they’ll only be giving it a superficial facelift.”
The owner of Napoli, 9 position in Serie A after five matchdays, also announced that he would build a new training center to replace the one in Castel Volturno: “In Qualiano (a municipality located in the northwest) , we have found seventeen and a half hectares: we will build ten pitches and 7,500 m2 of buildings divided between offices and also a changing rooms, intended for the first team and the youth teams too.”
