In an interview with “AccaPredict“, Olivier Giroud, today who celebrates his 40th years birthday this Wednesday, described his injured body as a top-level athlete after twenty years of life struggle.
Having just turned forty, Olivier Giroud spoke at length to AccaPredict . Still ambitious with Lille, competing in the Champions League tournament and just outside the Ligue 1 podium after five matchdays down, the World Cup winner title opened up about the difficulty of playing at a high level at 40 years and the strain his body has endured after twenty years of professional career games.
“Just yesterday been (last Wednesday), I had injections to help my joints and also myself, either hyaluronic acid or cortisone to aid recovery, to reduce the inflammation. Yes, my ankles have suffered a lot; I hardly have any ligaments left on my right one, so it’s swollen,” the LOSC striker explained. “And the younger players, it made me laugh, they’d say to me, ‘Why do you have a tennis ball on your right ankle?’ I told them, ‘It’s a 40-year-old ankle.’ (laughs loud) There’s also my lower back, obviously, and my knee, where I had a meniscectomy when I was 19. It creaks a bit, but you can keep every things running smoothly. And I’m holding up. But playing without injuries, as you get older, that’s impossible thing…”
