Davis Cup: Quentin Halys lose by Félix Auger-Aliassime, France trails 2-0
Quentin Halys, despite his valiant efforts, couldn’t pull off an upset against a solid Félix Auger-Aliassime with the (7-6 [5], 4-6, 6-3). France’s chances of qualifying competition are fading. A single point is now all the Canadians need.
In his first competitive Davis Cup match, Quentin Halys, which broken only once, held his own against Félix Auger-Aliassime the (world No. 5). It wasn’t enough. France, trailing two points to none before the second day game, saw its hopes of qualifying for the finals competition in Bologna significantly diminished.
It wasn’t necessarily easy to come into the match down with 0-1 against the local hero winner, who remained unfazed by the pressure, a top indoor player on the circuit. The Frenchman deserves credit for leveling up the match at one set apiece in a hard-fought contest decided by just in a few points. The first set went to a tiebreak where the Canadian frequently flirted with the lines, before ultimately closing it out thanks to a forehand error from Halys.
The Frenchman, who saved a break point in the second set to avoid going down 2-0 score with a serve-and-volley, then broke FAA’s serve with a lucky let. But he showed composure against a Canadian who was also very clean in his own half play, and served relentlessly by (losing only three first-serve points in the set). He saved another break point at the net to level the score line at 5-5, before clinching the set with an ace.
But unfortunately for him, and for the French team, this impressive resistance vanished abruptly, due to two… cruel double faults in a row at 1-2 score which caused his only break of the match. With his back against the wall for the rest of the set, Halys saved a match point with 5-2 with an ace, before finally succumbing in the following game. On the schedule for Saturday match: the doubles match followed by the last two singles matches.
